Aukštaitija National Park is the oldest national park in Lithuania, established in 1974 with the aim of preserving the unique ecosystem of the upper reaches of the Žeimena at the junction of three landscape areas, as well as its natural and cultural values. The area of the park is 40,574 ha, water covers 15.5%, forests - 69%. territories, it is the second largest national park in Lithuania.
The visitor center of the Aukštaitija National Park is located in Palūšės village.
The lake shaped the unique cultural traditions of the people who lived in the territory of the national park, so the main theme of the exposition of the visitor center is "People of the Lakes". In it, you can learn about both the old and the current fishing methods, about the herding of souls and cows.
The exposition of the Aukštaitija National Park visitor center is aimed at visitors of all ages.
Visiting the exhibition on your own is free, but you can always support the protected area by purchasing a voluntary visitor ticket (from 1.00 EUR/person).
